Everyone is likely to suffer from stress at some point in their career. However, when this stress doesn’t stop or becomes overwhelming, this can have a serious impact on your health and wellbeing.
Rather than keeping your head down and trying to carry on, it’s important to take action. Priory Wellbeing Centre Dubai explains ways in which you can reduce stress that is caused by your job.
Don’t Ignore the Symptoms
Your body acts as the first warning sign when you are stressed. Identify the early symptoms and learn strategies to help you cope with them right away rather than letting unhealthy coping habits take hold.
If you catch yourself tensing up or becoming irritable, get some fresh air, leave the situation, or try tensing and relaxing certain parts of your body to see if you can relieve the symptoms of stress.
Take a Break
Sometimes you need time away from a situation to step away from your stresses. If you don’t have the time to go for a long break, take micro breaks. Let your phone ring once or twice, allow that email to sit in your inbox for an extra minute, and take pleasure in making your mid-morning cup of coffee.
If you can, try to make time for regular breaks and lunch away from your desk. These pauses can help you to pre-emptively ease tension and stop pressures from building up.

Think About Yourself
Many people feel that working longer than their contracted hours is expected, or that they need to work well into the evening due to pressures at their job.
If you regularly take overtime or agree to additional tasks and projects, think about the impact this may be having on your health and home life. Spending time with family and friends and eating properly in the evenings can go a long way to preventing stress from affecting your health and wellbeing.
It’s ok if you can’t be everywhere and do everything - try to let go of your inner perfectionism and enjoy life away from work.

Prepare and Plan in Advance
There are only so many hours in a day. Take the time to plan and prepare your day or week; organise, prioritise and set achievable goals. This can help you to recognise what important tasks need to be done, and when you have time to achieve them.
This can also help you recognise whether you have too much on your plate. If this is the case, try to allocate tasks and give other people responsibilities. If you can’t do this, talk to your line manager about your workload to try and find a solution together.
Get Help
When you are suffering from the effects of stress, and are finding that it is impacting on your health and wellbeing, it is crucial that you get help. Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling.
If you feel that you are unable to speak to someone that you know, you can always get help and support from Priory Wellbeing Centre Dubai. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness and one-to-one therapy sessions are all treatments that can help prevent unhealthy coping habits from developing so that you can enjoy a better quality of life.
